The ruling Frente Amplio (FA) coalition did not celebrate its 37th
anniversary on 5 February. The FA is mired in uncertainty after President
Tabaré Vázquez categorically ruled out seeking re-election on 24 January. With
Vice-President Rodolfo Nin Novoa also ruling himself out of the running and a
corruption scandal affecting the economy minister, Danilo Astori, attention is
focusing on the agriculture minister, José Mujica, as a potential candidate for
the FA in the 2009 presidential elections. He, too, is distancing himself from
the top job, however. For the moderates in the party, backing Mújica - a
